From nine to 57 holes – and the journey continues
What do Annika Sörenstam, Seve Ballesteros, Sandy Lyle and Greg Norman have in common?
Reply: They have all competed at Vasatorp.
Since Vasatorps Golfklubb was founded in 1973, we have grown from nine holes to one of Sweden's largest golf facilities. Here, some of the world's top players have competed, generations of young golfers have trained, and four courses with completely different characters have emerged.
1973 – Vasatorp Golf Club is formed.
1974 – The first 18 holes are inaugurated on the Old Course, designed by Thure Bruce.
1978–1980 – SEO is played at Vasatorp. Seve Ballesteros wins in 1978, Sandy Lyle in 1979 and Greg Norman in 1980.
2002 – Annika Sörenstam wins the Compaq Open at Vasatorp.
2005 – West 9th Street is inaugurated.
2008 – Tournament Course opens and Vasatorp gets an additional 18 holes.
2013 – The Old Course is being developed with new hole lengths, greens and fairways and will become the Classic Course.
2022 – The Alley Course is being rebuilt and will become the 12-hole Park Course.
2024 – World golf returns when Tournament Course hosts Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed. The winner is Linn Grant, a former student at Riksidrottsgymnasiet in Helsingborg with Vasatorp as a training environment.
2025 – Vasatorp Golf Club is granted 6,5 million SEK from the Swedish Inheritance Fund for a new multi-purpose building with, among other things, studios for winter training. Construction starts in the fall of 2026.
And the journey continues.
A place where future stars train
Through the Riksidrottsgymnasiet in Helsingborg, Vasatorp has been a training environment for some of Sweden's top young golfers for many years. Former students include Ludvig Åberg, Linn Grant and Maja Stark.
The dream of a community
Where it all began
The history of Vasatorp Golf Club actually begins before the club even existed.
The land around Vasatorps Gård was owned at this time by Skanska and Göran Bengtssons Byggnads ABUlf Widerström, then head of Skanska, saw the potential in the area and had an idea: the land could be developed into a golf course and a recreation area.
In 1972 he contacted the course architect Thure Bruce, who began to sketch out how a golf course could take shape at Vasatorp. A committee was formed including Allan Persson, who would later become the club's first chairman, Olof Mathiasson and Walter Bengtsson.
The project was named "Golf course at Vasatorp".
The interest proved to be great. In January 1973, over 400 people for a kick-off meeting, and Vasatorp Golf Club was formed.
Then things moved quickly. The first nine holes were soon finished and already in 1974 the club was able to inaugurate a complete 18-hole facility. Vasatorp then had around 700 members.
Just over 50 years later, 18 holes have become 57 and the number of members has grown to around 3,700.
But it all started with an idea about what the land around Vasatorps Gård could become.
Competitions
World stars and championships – part of Vasatorp's DNA
Vasatorp's history is also a history of major competitions, championships and some of golf's biggest names.
SEO, the predecessor to the Nordea Masters, came to Vasatorp as early as 1978. Sven Tumba had discovered the course and the competition was played here for three years in a row. The winners? Seve Ballesteros in 1978, Sandy Lyle in 1979 and Greg Norman in 1980.
The same year that Seve won at Vasatorp, 1978, Vasatorp Golf Club was named Golf Club of the Year by the Golf Journalists Association.
Since then, a long list of national and international competitions and championships have visited Vasatorp. Among them are SISM, JSM, Ramlösa Open, Helsingborg Golf Open, Jubileumsmästerskapet and an international match between Sweden and Scotland.
In 2002, the world stars returned. The Compaq Open, one of the biggest competitions on the Ladies European Tour, was decided in front of the entire 60,908 visitors on a sun-drenched Vasatorp. The winner was Annika Sörenstam.
The Ladies European Tour returned in 2013 when Helsingborg Open came to Vasatorp. The competition was played here for three years, 2013–2015, with Rebecca Artis, Dewi Schreefel and Nicole Broch Larsen as winners.
Vasatorp also has a long tradition of hosting Swedish junior and amateur golf at the highest level. JSM Stroke played on the Tournament Course in 2013 and Annika Invitational Europe was arranged at Vasatorp in 2019 and 2022. In 2022, it was also played SM Club Team for Women on the Classic Course.
In 2024, the international tour golf returned when the Tournament Course hosted the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed on the DP World Tour and Ladies European Tour. The winner was Linn Grant – a former student at the Riksdrottsgymnasiet in Helsingborg, with Vasatorp as a training environment during her high school years.
2025 Championship Golf Continued when Vasatorp hosted Men's European Team Championships and Men's Match Championship – two more major championships to add to a competitive history that spans almost five decades.
From Ballesteros, Lyle and Norman to Sörenstam and Grant. From international tour golf to the European Championship and Swedish Championships. Major competitions have been a part of Vasatorp almost from the beginning – and continue to be part of our DNA.
From Vasatorp to the highest level of golf
Developing young golfers has been an important part of Vasatorp for many years.
Already under the club's first pro Jim Suckling, and later through Keith Davies and Stefan Kronvall, among others, a strong junior program was developed. Over the years, players such as Mikael Krantz, Gabriel Hjertstedt, Kalle Brink, Mikael Lundberg and Steven Jeppesen has taken the step from Vasatorp to golf at the highest level.
In 1997, Gabriel Hjertstedt made Swedish golf history when he became the first Swede to win on the PGA Tour in the USA.
The successes have also come as a team. Vasatorp's men have won Swedish Club Championship team 1991, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2011, and in 2014 Vasatorp's women also took home the Swedish Championship gold medal.
Junior activities have long been an important part of the club's identity. In 2004 and 2005, Vasatorp was named Sweden's best junior club by the Swedish Golf Association.
Sedan In 2014, Vasatorp is also a training environment for the National Sports High School in golf in Helsingborg.Here, some of the country's most promising young players train side by side with the club's own juniors and elite players.
Through RIG, Vasatorp has also become part of the training environment for players who later reached the absolute world elite, including Ludvig Åberg, Linn Grant and Maja Stark.
From the club's own juniors to some of Sweden's biggest golf stars - Vasatorp has for generations been a place where young players have had the opportunity to train, develop and take the next step.
57 holes – and a training environment for all levels
Vasatorp's development has never been about standing still. From the first holes in the 1970s, the facility has grown and changed in step with both golf and ambitions.
In 2005, one of the biggest steps in the club's history was taken. when work on a brand new 18-hole course began. The assignment went to the American architectural firm Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest & Associates and was inaugurated on June 6, 2008. Tournament Course – built with the ambition to maintain international championship class.
Development continued. In 2013, the Old Course was reopened as the Classic Course. after an extensive renovation with new greens and fairways and changed hole layouts. Here much of Vasatorp's origins live on – on the course where the club's history once began.
The Tournament Course received international recognition when it was named Sweden's best golf course 2015, 2016 and 2017 at the World Golf Awards.
In 2022, the former Allébanan was developed into today's 12-hole Park Course., created for a more modern and flexible golf experience.
Today Vasatorp consists of 57 holes spread over four courses with different character and identity – from the Tournament Course as our flagship and the Classic Course where it all began, to the Park Course and the West 9.
But Vasatorp is more than its courses. The training areas have developed over the years into an important part of the facility., with a driving range, putting greens and areas for close play and technique training. Here, those who have just started playing golf can mingle with the club's juniors, members, elite players and students from the National Sports High School.
Development also continues off the course. New training opportunities and investments in year-round golf build on the same idea that has existed throughout Vasatorp's history – to create a place where people can play, train and develop, regardless of level and ambition.
